7 Holiday Hair Ideas to Jumpstart the Season

The holiday season is fast approaching. Along with the lights, tons of Christmas wrapping paper and egg nog comes the endless holiday celebrations. The weather changes from slightly cold to freezing and we feel less enthused about doing our hair. Updos and protective styles are a great option for the holidays because they are easy to maintain and we can avoid frizz from all the cold/wet air.

Here are 7 ultra chic style ideas for the holidays, so that you don't have to worry about your hair and focus more on your gifting and party hopping.

Natural Hair Tutorial | Goddess Braid the Perfect Summer Protective Style

1. Start on detangled hair (The hair in the picture below was previously in a twist out. The hair was sectioned and lightly sprayed with water and conditioned using Thirsty Kurls Leave-in Conditioner to soften the texture.) This leave-in conditioner makes the hair soft and allows it to be easily smoothed with a boar bristle brush.

2. Use a rattail comb to fashion a precise part on one side. The model in this photo opted for a textured bang so hair was left out in the front. A clean separation in the part makes for a sleeker and more striking look. We used Jelle Coconut Styling Gel to smooth the hair and edges for a seamless beautiful braid.

3. Once each braid has made it to the nape, secure the ends with bobby pins. A sharp part makes this look neat and stunning. Use hair pins that match your hair color.

The Goddess Braid is a perfect protective style for Summer.

It is very low maintenance: to fresh up the look, spray lightly with water and apply a light weight gel that will not flake or crunch like Jelle Coconut Styling Gel. The hair must be tied down at night with a satin or silk scarf to prevent frizz.

Braided Updo: Protective Style

Today, marks the beginning of The Good Hair Blog Protective Style Challenge. TGHBPSC is all about protecting and growing HEALTHY HAIR. I usually wear my hair in mini twists but because I have fine hair, twists only last a week. I wanted to find a style that was low maintenance, cute and conservative so I opted for a braided updo. The back of my hair is braided in a swoop direction from right to left and the middle are two strand twists that are pinned down. Although this is a protective style, I can loosen the two strand twists for a wilder style as the style gets older. To keep my hair fresh and moisturized, I will spray it lightly with a concoction I made....and I mean spray lightly (one or two pumps and that is it!). My concoction consists of a half cup of conditioner, a tablespoon of olive oil and majority water. At night, I tie a silk scarf around my head to protect the braids in the back (the bow of the scarf is in the front near forehead.) I then place my satin bonnet on to make sure that my entire head is protected. I plan to keep this style in for two to three weeks.

Fall Trend: Braids & Twists

Braids and Twists are all the rage this Fall. Our favorite celebrity crushes like Beyonce and Solange have been sporting long box braids all summer. More importantly, many of the ladies that I follow on Instagram  including Claire of the Fashion Bomb Daily (IG: fashionbombdaily), Po0paite (IG: Po0paite), Barbie of Chichappenz (IG: Chichappenz) and Vanessa of Onyxxrose (IG: Onyxxrose) have caught on to the trend.

Box braids and Senegalese twists are great protective styles but many fear them because of horror hair stories. In an effort to grow healthy natural hair, I am determined to take care of my scalp and exposed hair while my twists are in. Below are a list of products that I am using to stimulate growth and keep my hair healthy. In addition to the below list, taking daily biotin supplements is a good way to grow strong hair. We know that hair is dead and once damage is done to the hair it must be cut off. By taking biotin supplements, we ensure that our new hair or new growth grows strong so it can withstand the damage from styling and the environment.

Hair Products to Maintain Style:

Vitamin E Oil- Box Braids and twists have been known to pull out edges or break hair. To prevent this or lessen the damage, I apply vitamin e oil to my scalp as needed to increase scalp circulation. Vitamin e stimulates the scalp and encourages growth.

African Pride Braid Sheen Spray- this spray is particularly useful in relaxing the tension that braids have on the hair and scalp. It also adds shine, reduces odours, soothes itchy and dryness, relieves frizz and breakage.

Eco Styler Gel- As your hair starts to grow and the braids loosen up, you can use Eco styler gel to smooth edges. My favourite for edge control is the olive oil gel.

With proper care, box braids and twists should last 2 to 3 months. I am aiming to keep mine in for at least 2 months.

Mad Hair Monday Model: Wakeema Hollis

Happy Monday Kurlees! I know there is nothing happy about Monday...In fact if Monday was a person I would slap her. I'm dead serious....tho.. my favorite days of the week are Payday and Holiday.  In honor of  Black History Month, we will be featuring natural hair models that walk the runway. Today's featured model is Wakeema Hollis, who goes by the model name Hollis---because in her opinion its easier than saying Wakeema. She was born in 1984 (Yay for all the 1984 babies- YOU ROCK!) in Memphis, TN. Her most striking features are her beautiful Mocha skin, graceful long neck & legs and fierce natural hair. Hollis is not afraid to flaunt her bomb afro. Occasionally, you'll see her on the runway with long natural hair extensions but her signature look is her untamed TWA. No matter what she wears, she makes it look darn good! Do the damn thing girl!

Ever looked in the mirror and thought "ugh my hair looks dry and brittle"? #naturalhair

Other than your beautiful face, your hair is usually the second thing that people see when they look at you. Hair allows you to express yourself and change up your look. Whether your feeling classy or eclectic, it can all be accomplished through hair. A new hairstyle can make you look older, sexy, or younger. So it is very important to take extra special care of one of your most important assets. Here are some helpful tips for beautiful hair.
H20 (WATER)
We are all guilty of not drinking enough H20...well I know I am. When your body is deprived of essential nutrients it tends to pull those nutrients from parts of the body that don't need as much and unfortunately the hair is one of them. Dry, brittle hair is a sign that your body is lacking water or moisture. Brittle hair appears dull and is easily broken with the least amount of stress. The sun, harsh chemicals and heat are also culprits of dry brittle hair. Natural oils (sebum) produced by the scalp have a harder time reaching the ends of curly because of its shape. Drinking lots of water can aid in sebum production.
HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I DRINK?
About 8 8oz. glasses a day. Thats about 4 1/2 Deer Park individual size bottles. The summer is coming up which means your probably going to sweat more. You should always "up" your water consumption during times of excessive perspiration.
PROTECT YOUR HAIR
Protective styles are not just for when you feel like being lazy. They actually serve a greater purpose and that is to protect your hair. Frequent blow drying, teasing, tucking and pulling can do a number on your strands. Try and protect your hair as much as possible from stressful styles, the sun and harsh chemicals. The key to length retention is to protect those ends.
MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR
Nature has provided us with a ton of moisturizers that can leave our hair smooth and strong. Using oils and butters like argan oil (Moroccan oil), macadamia oil, coconut oil, and cupuacua butter are great ways to treat your hair. They can help protect it from the sun and strengthen strands. Well nourished and moisturized hair will not only look healthy but be healthy.
