EXCLUSIVE: Celebrity & Fashion Blogger Sherice of SheSoMajor

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do and why you started blogging?

I am a semi-retired model, a journalist, a blogger, social media expert and a citizen of the world!  I make my voice count! I'm a full-time blogger, I've been in the 'industry' for three years now and I love it. I started blogging during a break from university. I was in New York City, and I just woke up and decided - 'I'm going to start a blog'. I didn't have a summer job at the time and thought it would be a great way to channel my creativity and have some fun!  I never thought it would've grown into the community that it has but SheSoMajor.com is definitely an entertainment hotspot!

How long have you been natural? If all of your life, what kept you from relaxing your hair?

I've been natural my entire life! I'm a very low maintenance person [well kinda lol] and the fact that I can hop in a shower and slap my hair in one is one of the biggest reasons for not relaxing my hair. It's very easy for me to maintain, it's inexpensive, and I was made for curls!  For me, being an island girl, relaxing my hair was NOT even an option. How am I going to enjoy the beautiful beaches if I'm worried about getting my hair wet?!

Do you have a hair care regimen? If so, what is it and what products do you use?

I honestly don't have a hair care regimen. I wash with Dove shampoo and conditioner, towel dry and go! I switch products so often that it's soooo many! I feel like after using products for a certain amount of time my hair gets so accustomed to it that it doesn't 'work' anymore. As of late I've been loving the Dove shampoo & conditioner. I would use Mizani coconut soufflĂ© to moisturize, and I throw in Infusium leave-in-conditioner when my hair gets a bit tangled.

What is your favorite low maintenance natural hair style.

When I'm really feeling good, I'd finger twist my hair. I wash and condition, spritz a little Infusium, then I would apply just a little Mizani coconut soufle and IC gel [to maintain frizz], part my hair into sections then twirl my hair around my fingers and that's it for the week! I don't have to touch it for about a week so it's soooo convienient.  Other times, when I'm not feeling so great, I would simply wash, towel dry and a high bun. It's my go to style! It's sophisticated, chic and makes me feel forever young!

What makes you love your hair?

My hair is an extension of my personality! It can't be tamed. It's big, it's bold and it's MAJAH! It's just who I am, which is probably why I love it so so much!

Kurlee Fashion Frenzy: Peplum Everything!

Hello Kurlees! Happy Monday! Yes, I am the annoying coworker who walks into work all cheerful on Monday morning and takes the time to say Good Morning to everyone!

Today, I decided to spice it up a little and introduce a new feature. If you are an avid reader of kurleebelle.com, then you are accustomed to seeing an interview each Monday or a Mad Hair Monday Model but today it's all about fashion!

If you follow fashion trends then you probably own or have seen the Peplum! This cute trend comes in the form of a blouse/shirt, skirt or dress. I love this trend because it disguises that little bulge of fat under the navel area so well....giving me just enough time to work off the extra pounds before bikini season (technically we are a week into bikini season..)

Beyonce and Lady Gaga are featured rocking one of my favorite colors. In your opinion, who wore it best?

I promised I wouldn't talk about Solange no mo...but we all admired how stunning she looked in this ultra chic neon yellow peplum gown!

Here are some pieces that I've considered adding to my peplum collection. Follow me on Instagram @terrinique to see which one or ones I chose.

Do you own a peplum piece?

Update: Terri's Summer Hair Care Regimen (Week 2)

Hello Kurlee's! It has been about a week since my initial Summer Hair Care Regimen post! So I wanted to update you guys on what I did differently with my regimen.

First of all, I am absolutely in love with my semi-mini twists. With this style  I know exactly what I'm getting...no surprises. I usually wear the back of my hair pinned up and the front out and drooping down. If I'm going for a more elegant look, I will let pieces hang down the sides as seen in the photo with the Duke Blue (had to give a shout out to my alma mater) Mullet Dress. If I'm going for a more classic look, I will pin up the sides as seen in the photo with the black pencil skirt and heels. The great thing about this style is it is very low maintenance. I style my hair once a week (on wash day) and to refresh the hair, I spray lightly with water and apply Kurlee Belle's Tropical Oils Blend to seal the ends.

Cocktail Reception- Elegant Look

Everyday Work Outfit- Classic Look

As mentioned in the initial post, every week I deep condition my hair to combat frizz and dryness from the summer heat. This week, instead of doing a deep treatment, I decided on a hot oil treatment using Kurlee Belle's Tropical Oils Blend. The essential oils blend was applied to dry hair after submerging the bottle in hot water (Check out a previous post that explains the difference between Deep Treatments & Oil Treatments). The oil was massaged into the scalp for about 2 to 5 minutes and applied generously to the ends. If you have dry scalp, dandruff, breakage or split ends, oil treatments really help to minimize the damage. After my hair was coated in the treatment, I applied a plastic cap. The treatment stayed on for about 3 hours of air dry time and 15 minutes of heated time. The reason behind this is that I was being lazy by lounging around the house. The usual time is 15 minutes of heat while sitting under a hooded dryer.

The oil treatment was rinsed out with cool water to seal in the nutrients followed by Kurlee Belle's Almond and Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo rinsed out with warm water. Then Kurlee Belle's Thirsty Kurls Leave-In Conditioner was applied for the detangling and sectioning process. In addition, to applying Kurlee Belle's A Kurlee Girl's Dream Kurl Defining Cream, I used raw shea butter. Since, I style my hair only once a week, shea butter helps to seal in the moisture and keep the hair soft and shiny. In addition to adding shea butter to this past week's regimen, I massaged my scalp with vitamin e oil daily. Vitamin E oil is used to increase scalp circulation and aids in hair growth. I particularly paid close attention to my sides and thinning spots, since these are the areas that received the most stress from when I wore sew-ins or braids.

Day 7 hair- Up close

Tip: The less you manipulate your hair, the more it retains length. Protective styling is a great way to give your hair a rest and let it grow. It is also a way to eliminate having to do your hair each day. So you have more time to concentrate on being fly.

Alot of subscribers have been asking what I use on my skin...look forward to a skin care regimen post soon..

Deep Treatments & Oil Treatments

What's the difference between a deep conditioner and oil treatment?

Deep treatments help to smooth the cuticle, giving your hair a healthier appearance. Before using a deep treatment, you should always shampoo the hair to remove any dirt or build up. To be effective, deep treatments should be applied to the hair, particularly the ends the hair, and left on for a few minutes (15 to 20 minutes). The best deep treatments or conditioners are water based.

Each strand of hair has 3 layers: medulla, cortex, and cuticle. Deep conditioning affects the outer layer of the hair (cuticle). Think of the cuticle of your hair like you would the shingles on a roof. When shingles are in place on a roof, they overlap and lay down flat. The same is true of healthy hair. With damaged hair the cuticles stand up and away from the hair shaft giving your hair a dry frizzy look. Deep treatments help to smooth the cuticles by filling the gaps with nutrients that help the shingles to lay flat.

In addition to a deep treatment, a hot oil treatment can be done. Hot oil treatments are applied to dry hair before shampooing. Left to sit on the hair for a few minutes and rinsed out. Oil treatments are in the form of a liquid. Hot oil treatments minimize damage from styling by sealing in moisture and preventing frizz. Hot oil treatments soak into the hair.

When should I use a deep treatment or oil treatment?

If your hair is dry, frizzy, brittle or unmanageable, you need a deep treatment.

If you have dry scalp, dandruff, split ends, breakage, dry hair or seriously damaged hair a hot oil treatment should be used regularly.

Should I apply the treatment to wet or dry hair?

Deep treatments should be applied to damp hair.

Hot oil treatments should be applied to dry hair.

Should I shampoo my hair before or after?

There is no need to shampoo your hair after a deep treatment as you would like to retain moisture from the deep treatment. You may shampoo your hair after a hot oil treatment to rid your hair of excess oils.

Why use heat i.e. sit under a dryer?

Heat makes the hair shaft expand so that the treatment is absorbed. Example..when it's hot and humid your hair becomes frizzy because it is expanding to suck up the moisture out of the air.

Why should I rinse out my conditioner with cool water?

Cool water makes the hair shaft contract sealing in the nutrients from the deep or oil treatment.

What are the best hair oils?

Coconut oil, Castor oil, Avocado oil, Moringa oil, Argan oil, Vitamin E oil, Jojoba oil, Olive oil and Rosemary oil.

Banana Nut & Avocado Deep Treatment is just what the doctor ordered for dry, damaged hair. Bring those tresses back to life with our smooth concoction of Banana, Avocado, Honey and Coconut. Banana is rich in potassium and hailed for its moisturizing properties. Avocado contains fatty acids that nourish, smooth and soften hair. Honey provides shine while conditioning to make hair soft and supple. Coconut hydrates, conditions and softens.

Kurlee Tropical Oils Blend is a lubricating blend of essential tropical oils that is formulated to restore dry, damaged hair. Castor Oil is an emollient that contains fatty acids and encourages hair growth. Coconut oil strengthens and deeply moisturizes. Jojoba oil moisturizes and softens. Avocado oil contains essential nutrients that promote hair growth and nourishment. Argan oil hydrates and strengthens for enhanced growth. Moringa Oil leaves hair feeling silky.

Mad Hair Monday Model: Barbie of Chichappenz!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do and why did you start blogging?

My name is Barbie and yes that is my given name. I work at a law firm as an administrative assistant. I started blogging in part because I have always been into fashion and wanted an outlet to express my sense of style and my love of fashion. The other reason I started a blog was because I went natural. I did the big chop (well in my case it was more like the big shave) and I wanted to chronicle my natural hair journey. I wanted to start a blog which could serve as an inspiration and a resource for women like me who are still in the early stages of their natural hair journey.

How long have you been natural? If all of your life, what kept you from relaxing your hair?

I have been natural since May of 2011. However, because I wore a low fade for the first six months of my journey it’s almost as if I have only been on my journey for a few months. Currently I am rocking a three inch teenie weenie afro (twa) affectionately named Lola.

Do you have a hair care regimen? If so, what is it and what products do you use?

As my hair is growing I am constantly tweaking my hair regimen. Presently, I wash and coil my hair twice a week usually on Sunday and Thursday. I co-wash my hair with As I Am coconut co-wash cleanser. I use Ouidad’s moisture lock conditioner as my leave-in and then use Ampro Olive Oil gel to do my coils. If I feel my hair needs to be washed with a shampoo I will use Herbal Essence’s Hello Hydration and then deep condition with Curl Junkie Deep Fix or Shea Moisture Organic African Black Soap Purification Masque. I am a complete product junkie so I am always trying new products but as of right now these are my favorite products.

What is your favorite low maintenance natural hair style?

Coils and coil-outs are my favorite low maintenance/high maintenance natural hair style. They are high maintenance because it takes me about two hours to do them. However, they are low maintenance because they last at least three or more days so it’s not as if I have to do them often. After I coil I just let it air dry. At night I use a silk or satin scarf and in the morning I spritz with a little water and separate the coils.

What makes you love your hair?

My natural hair has given me a deeper sense confidence in myself. She is a source of inspiration because had I not gone natural I wouldn’t have started my natural hair and style blog. She is kinky, coily, she is coarse fine, she is rebellious and she is beautiful. And she makes me feel beautiful.

Ok Solange! I am not talking about your hair no mo!

Listen ya'll! Stop admiring and talking about Solange Knowles and her natural hair...because as she says she is not the poster child for natural hair or team natural. Hair is hair and she obviously doesn't care about it.....Well slap me in the face. The last time I saw Solange..She was the poster child for Carol's Daughter Transitioning Movement....which correct me if I am wrong is dedicated to women with natural hair??????? I wonder what the CEO over at Carol's Daughter had to say about Solange's comments since they have been using her along with Cassie for months as the spokesmodel's for their "HAIR" campaign.

So Solange, " I know Carol's Daughter is not your bread and butter but I am pretty sure they cut you a check every so often and would not appreciate you not wanting to talk about no damn hair no mo." #justsaying

DO NOT buy a product because a celebrity endorses it.....because although we in the natural hair community care about our hair and wear satin caps .....they don't really care as much as we do! My goodness...she doesn't even wear a satin cap! lol

Just to add insult to injury...Solange not wanting to talk about hair is like Wendy not wanting to talk about burgers...It's just not right. Your face is all over a hair care website but hair is not important to you?  #cray

I wonder if she even uses Carol's Daughter products.....

Solange Tweets:

What do you think? Should we give Solange a pass since she was very emotional that day or NOT? I am just outraged that she doesn't wear a satin cap...LOL
